A friend of mine requested a crest for his <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larp">LARP</a> character. I was given a list of items to steer towards and items to stay away from, some samples of what he likes that's out there, and then a very detailed origin/history background of his character. All in all, I would need to make a majestic, evil, dark crest. His character is wealthy bad ass. Key items would be a black heart, two swords (<i>rage</i>, the other <i>discipline</i>), and the colors red and black. Still not done, but we are getting close . . .<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
As always, I started with initial sketches to get a feel for the direction we would be going in. I love this part. It really makes the client get a gut reaction to the concept. What they like, dislike, and sometimes more important - what they thought they would like. I enjoy the brainstorming and collaboration side in this stage. Here are the rounds as of now:<br />

design support systems will be coming to a close. I have had that site since college and it was time for a refresh. It was time for Kerfren Kreative to get a logo.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I wanted to come up with a new logo id for my resume as I contiued to hunt out a FT gig. After rounds of sketches and playing with font treatments I found one I was happy with. The blue colors are the base and tie my resume, portfolio, freelance works, gallery pieces, etc. all together. I feel that it stands well on it's own or with the extra text and easily works with different color variations so I can adjust accordingly depending on the project.<br />

My temp gig has become an official FT position. I am quite excited to be learning yet another angle of the packaging business through design. I have always been in the design shops working for clients - now I am the client working as a part of the in house creative services. I work with a great team and I am looking fwd to a new wave of challenges and accomplishments.<br />
<br />
The new job is very rich in licensed works with Disney and I have a baby girl coming soon, so I imagine my drive for full creative work will increase as my actual freetime will decrease. So it is! That's what this blog was always intended for anyways. My freetime, out of the norm creative work. Small freelance pieces, personal endeavors, etc. Professional portfolio materials are on Coroflot, this blog is for all the fun little misc projects I get to sneak in. Thanks for looking.<br />

The Autumn Society is proud to present it’s first charity art show! Toys bring children joy, spark imaginations and inspire creativity. Help others in the Philadelphia area so that less fortunate children can still have the joy of a new toy this holiday season. What was your first toy? Your favorite? What amazing adventures did you go on with your action figures? What distant planets did you explore with your spaceship? The Autumn Society will show you their visions of childhood favorites - somewhere between plastic molding & imagination.<br />
<br />
There will be a donation box on site for new, unwrapped toys for our local Philadelphia Chapter Toys for Tots. And a portion of the proceeds will go to Toys for Tots nationally. Join us this December on First Friday for the art, the nostalgia, and the gift of charity.<br />

<b>THE CHARITY</b> - TOYS FOR TOTS<br />
The objectives of the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots are to help needy children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable natural resources - our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.<br />

Hi everyone,<br />
I really enjoyed being a part of The Autumn Society's Video Game Gore Show so I pitched an idea I had for December and got the green light. If you are the area please join us at Brave New Worlds of Old City on December's First Friday. Special thanks goes out to <a href="http://www.peterwonsowski.com/">Peter Wonsowski</a> for his awesome illustration on the flyer.<br />

</tbody></table><a href="http://groundkontrol.com/">Ground Kontrol</a> of Portland, OR is doing an awesome "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dia_de_los_muertos">Day of the Dead</a>" art show with NES carts as the canvas. These 40 individual carts will be done by different members of the <a href="http://www.theautumnsociety.com/">autumn society</a> and will be arranged to create a larger skull final piece. Great concept and I am looking fwd to seeing everyone's work.<br />
<br />
My piece was a runaway spin off from my brainstorming session from the Video Game Gore Show collection of doodles. I had the idea of using NES carts as tombstones and zombie NES characters crawling out of the dirt. Here was my chance to revisit that concept.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a> I had my initial sketch planned out and kept the skull boxy to retain the NES cart vibe. I knew from the start that I wanted a sculpted, painted hybrid piece. It was pretty straight forward. Paint the cart, lightly sketch, paint the cart, sculpt the components, paint the components (with the exception of the dirt pile - why paint dirt when you can <i>use dirt</i>? a thin layer of glue and dusted with dirt), and finally hot glue gun the pieces all together. A lovely, unexpected result is that piece actually stands upright on it's own.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK6v7Seksy-XOqIuVKQSHGNWLYY84FTlbfrkNfXeFA3ZTizZKoTK-eBqERxhoOc1syOMtWnaR2iIYXbVaXN9LqVHOOAT3D5C8_JWxgFKjJutAGsTlwApVVqwzldSQ6DL7oU3Awb1JckLOp/s1600/Stages_8Frames.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK6v7Seksy-XOqIuVKQSHGNWLYY84FTlbfrkNfXeFA3ZTizZKoTK-eBqERxhoOc1syOMtWnaR2iIYXbVaXN9LqVHOOAT3D5C8_JWxgFKjJutAGsTlwApVVqwzldSQ6DL7oU3Awb1JckLOp/s400/Stages_8Frames.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> I used to really dislike the Day of the Dead art style and look overall, but after this project I'm pretty happy with the piece and I have a new appreciation for the holiday and it's art. The bright colors and celebration of those that have gone is really great. My wife is very sad to see this piece go, I had to take a lot of pictures and will probably end up making something similar for her as a gift for next year. <br />

I finally joined <a href="http://www.theautumnsociety.com/">The Autumn Society</a> after a year of deliberation. Illustration has always been my second love after graphic design. I fell in love with <a href="http://chogrinart.blogspot.com/">joe's</a> project after the <a href="http://www.theautumnsociety.com/2009/07/autumn-society-video-game-show-teaser.html">8-Bit Show</a> in Philly. After seeing how much fun everyone had with the <a href="http://www.theautumnsociety.com/2010/08/3g-show.html#uds-search-results">3G Show</a> in CA I could not put it off any longer. I contacted Joe and Jeff to learn about the next show. I couldn't have picked a better time - the theme for the next collaboration was Halloween and video games; Video Game Gore! I couldn't be more excited. (awesome <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg1jwqffzPVLOsjW6hbocFG83CAlQI7BOyetd4NaIuAlDWjgWjoTxg4Nrb2QWDMf-tgBWHcYw432cHfpGupyQ5yfVg0Vm5WONewLNkxPhptYSJO-53BuUEhKsjdvmn_j4YMgBhGY_wq60/s1600/videogamegore.jpg">promo flyer</a> by Evan M. Lopez).<br />

I had a handful of ideas for this show. I had it narrowed down to 3 concepts and picked the one that made me smile the most. The remaining two go in the "vault" for possible execution at a later time. I chose killer consoles, the evolution of one console coming into the market and smashing the previous top dog of home console gaming. I originally was going to start with the Odyssey2, but the Atari 2600 is really the first truly loved gaming console to reach an icon status. And I just went from there...I did have to be selective since I could not include every console. Runners up were Sega, SuperNintendo, Nintendo64 but all in all I tried to stick with landmark consoles and overall sales. The original Playstation sold amazingly well when I did some research. And the 360's and PS3's sales are so close in sales and love I made them a team destroying their previous versions. For the final frame, if we are to go by sales, the Nintendo Wii has destroyed both the PS3 and 360 without question since the general public has embraced this "not so gamer friendly" family oriented console.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsIo8PjqjmYRQ9ZCVC4vm_c4vdc9TnI1VirZ1RzYA1m7lweTkhHbf0SYZ5gS11sSQ7jLD9tLxvHRHN6s8TeaF1dwlW6glI-qFwrpFCAQ88vHnaTznvsf2rfLw5W38_aRfXixgtRCgboCCZ/s1600/Evolution_Sketches.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="67" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsIo8PjqjmYRQ9ZCVC4vm_c4vdc9TnI1VirZ1RzYA1m7lweTkhHbf0SYZ5gS11sSQ7jLD9tLxvHRHN6s8TeaF1dwlW6glI-qFwrpFCAQ88vHnaTznvsf2rfLw5W38_aRfXixgtRCgboCCZ/s320/Evolution_Sketches.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>I wanted to keep some variation in the weapons and damage to each console. Since i used a bat in the first, I stayed away from wrenches, swords, etc things of a similar shape and operation with any of the others. A shotgun once, so no gun, bazooka, etc.<br />
<br />
From the start I knew I wanted a long history frame type collection of scenes. Grayscale across the board with bright, blood splatter as the backdrop (I guess Frank Miller was in my head at the incepetion) all on a clean, crisp white. The scenes were done by freehand as rough sketches, some were done right from the initial sketch while others took a lot of longer to figure out with many variations. The complete grayscale component was ditched and I ended up adding color for the weapons and other minor details. The Wii was my most difficult scene since i was fighting with scale, weird angles, not finding the right weapon and how to damage two consoles at once. I was really happy with the final scene and loved that I could sneak in both consoles' system malfunction signals. Where as the PS2 chopping through the original Playstation stayed true to the first sketch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwv3M-g4A_ktN3SoqemPykJdRFKm9xZvkFg5hud_ov326n2RTwPuKrzw4L5ogFXHW7YsN9KGjrEfq44cx-b-hBmUZX4V-hXnZVYmoXcDANCi-wy7hdnXBBfhwhZo2Mp3UT2yAltN-uf160/s1600/blood_splatter+paint+sample.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="153" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwv3M-g4A_ktN3SoqemPykJdRFKm9xZvkFg5hud_ov326n2RTwPuKrzw4L5ogFXHW7YsN9KGjrEfq44cx-b-hBmUZX4V-hXnZVYmoXcDANCi-wy7hdnXBBfhwhZo2Mp3UT2yAltN-uf160/s200/blood_splatter+paint+sample.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>I wanted to do the splatter by hand and stay away from the default (and cliche) "ink" brushes in illustrator. The blood splatter was done with acrylic paints on plain cardstock. I used a nice mix, added some paper, cardboard, rice and packing peanuts to the blob for added text and depth for guts and tissue. Along with some other variations I knew I could play with in photoshop. After scanning the painting I was able to create about 8 unique variations of blood splatter backdrops and adjusted them accordingly to each scene.<br />
<br />
I am really happy with the final piece. I wanted something fun and sentimental and I think I achieved that. I hope that it is well received this Friday at the opening. I plan on making individual scenes available for purchase as small prints. I look forward to seeing everyone's completed work - there has been some really amazing sneak previews of pieces over at <a href="http://www.theautumnsociety.com/">Autumn Society</a> and I am honored be a part of it.<br />

His inspirations were <a href="http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=jet%20cowboy%20bebop&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1132&bih=907">Jet</a> from Cowboy Bebop and the robots from the Bjork video, "<a href="http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=bjork%20video%20robots&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1132&bih=907">All is Full of Love</a>".<br /><br />We worked on a bunch of initial sketches from my book to a few napkins at lunch. He wanted a simple, clean body panel style with a peak of wires, gears, etc. We worked together through rounds over 4-5 weeks to get it just right with tweaks here and there.<br /><br />The work needed to be a strong reference for the tattoo artist. Not exact, but enough pieces to put it together on his arm with some improv. The wires are multi colored in order to help communicate what was needed to be changed for final tattoo work (i.e. "make the pink one a double, ribbed wire and metallic") if the final art was entirely in grayscale, the wires would be a nightmare to discuss. In addition, I left the wires plain, but included a reference sheet of different styles to use for the tattoo artist to incorporate into the piece.<br /><br />The N7 logo is from Mass Effect and was quite simple to replicate. The final tattoo art will also have imperfections of wear and tear...battle damage if you will. I was really happy to work on this and I am happy to see it has continued to evolve from the digital art to the final tattoo work. It's always enjoyable to bounce ideas back and forth and watch a piece come into it's own.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjItjyTeed8tuxWnGvi1Wgk6BSJU3qe-L7vwOxAZkZDgtrJQC4uiT6G6LWS_rMOJqv_MBeY47SExG1TTAqQipVaxuFWcKPTeZHHo3KJaviPMDa9nnM9wLx_RB_eMFqreebELgEoB7ZmYZMe/s1600/bioarm_wire+reference.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 149px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjItjyTeed8tuxWnGvi1Wgk6BSJU3qe-L7vwOxAZkZDgtrJQC4uiT6G6LWS_rMOJqv_MBeY47SExG1TTAqQipVaxuFWcKPTeZHHo3KJaviPMDa9nnM9wLx_RB_eMFqreebELgEoB7ZmYZMe/s200/bioarm_wire+reference.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496115463106666994" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCYEBSr1sBQDL87HAfG-QOofnSW9ouHahLjhE4hcy2_s07LSTbHV3P4DPiun1IN-pbqCqxXuOKwYvpD8BbdkG25JQhYr9Z-c8HoTJQi_-K_Z16ikDLjqtTXkumATgEa-rWPBsf4P0ioqcO/s1600/bioarm_final-art.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 154px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCYEBSr1sBQDL87HAfG-QOofnSW9ouHahLjhE4hcy2_s07LSTbHV3P4DPiun1IN-pbqCqxXuOKwYvpD8BbdkG25JQhYr9Z-c8HoTJQi_-K_Z16ikDLjqtTXkumATgEa-rWPBsf4P0ioqcO/s200/bioarm_final-art.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496115708152941938" border="0" /></a>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4630451246136879263.post-34944482957796033342010-07-07T09:44:00.000-07:002010-07-07T09:53:48.180-07:00CYOA PART 8<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWbnAKkbzJ7GsxUFQh9Id5W533Ro5m0UaszT8JtsNkqFKtfksqIdCDnl9HRHd0LDJqwjN9X3avKPHzp2ivyJX2DMDBCPbEf9TC4KOr7W9sxa_kMROg4TXOJFJydYjxteqyDZ8xW6AkwVYv/s1600/CYOA_CapeRave_FINAL.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWbnAKkbzJ7GsxUFQh9Id5W533Ro5m0UaszT8JtsNkqFKtfksqIdCDnl9HRHd0LDJqwjN9X3avKPHzp2ivyJX2DMDBCPbEf9TC4KOr7W9sxa_kMROg4TXOJFJydYjxteqyDZ8xW6AkwVYv/s320/CYOA_CapeRave_FINAL.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491206386529480754" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Art in place. It changed about a gazillion times. I worked on coloring the background art first. The shoreline, the night sky and the sand. I had to be careful with the dark night sky and water, in order to keep a night setting without losing both into one dark mass. The lasers were fun to bring out the couple's silo heads. The party goers all had different poses. And the DJ was able to have a little more detail, i.e. his shirt and sunglasses as I came closer to completion. I removed the music notes, it was getting too busy. The stars stayed and broke up the night sky very well. The third panel is the completed art. Time for layout!</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha9SyxG9gCpVshYo6SCEHgRbaF5p7jrJ5mtzks1Z4IQZZ9Ah_Q4VOtj64uuUDg_1fCSIbOAzbKJsyTJgFAyYQr67WyTQVB-0D3Hev994Mfg91pQJwLN9z8JP_sHc5Qzpx-i476Vq-BXe2M/s1600/FINAL+cyoa+cover+artSTAGES.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 129px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha9SyxG9gCpVshYo6SCEHgRbaF5p7jrJ5mtzks1Z4IQZZ9Ah_Q4VOtj64uuUDg_1fCSIbOAzbKJsyTJgFAyYQr67WyTQVB-0D3Hev994Mfg91pQJwLN9z8JP_sHc5Qzpx-i476Vq-BXe2M/s320/FINAL+cyoa+cover+artSTAGES.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491204405677418290" border="0" /></a>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4630451246136879263.post-22076542680851544652010-07-07T09:24:00.000-07:002010-07-07T09:31:44.713-07:00CYOA PART 6I was happy with the cover art layout now and after writing the copy for the front and back of the book it was time for the back cover art. I knew it was going to be the hand reaching out to the blue circles of the watch. it had to be simple and fun, but intriguing as well as in B&W. I referenced my own hand with some old bracelets. Shot it, drew it, scanned it. I added the rings and the wavy blackness in photoshop.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS1sOm7I6RzbkaGt42GiITWmOsaFz9NK6exQI7VF8mBBsNks_xMF2ENnID4UaeKoimGdbCx-67OIbUh792FPEew3YHJByQ9L-l846RADwcsX28xIfMsif8e80HBMiZwzkyg1RSuelEwn9n/s1600/hand+reach_sketch.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 178px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS1sOm7I6RzbkaGt42GiITWmOsaFz9NK6exQI7VF8mBBsNks_xMF2ENnID4UaeKoimGdbCx-67OIbUh792FPEew3YHJByQ9L-l846RADwcsX28xIfMsif8e80HBMiZwzkyg1RSuelEwn9n/s320/hand+reach_sketch.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491201955049425442" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaup4KfTOYD5a6LiEISzDBks8DzTjXORlWsfVMTBL9wGRFzK6hMJiO4TJs0QKE3I550UlwLKMiG4AMZd21jRgCRv3GIocHrS-dN_7nPfLJXg_-soCQ2JmO1Z-5VfAe_CHRheGzGtEKclNM/s1600/hand+reach_final.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaup4KfTOYD5a6LiEISzDBks8DzTjXORlWsfVMTBL9wGRFzK6hMJiO4TJs0QKE3I550UlwLKMiG4AMZd21jRgCRv3GIocHrS-dN_7nPfLJXg_-soCQ2JmO1Z-5VfAe_CHRheGzGtEKclNM/s320/hand+reach_final.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491202761759141826" border="0" /></a>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4630451246136879263.post-13378389600669690212010-07-07T09:19:00.000-07:002010-07-07T09:36:00.920-07:00CYOA PART 5<span style="font-family:arial;">Now the formula was coming together and def had the style of the original books. The record was a nice thought, but after seeing it in the layout it had to go. With a crowd of people, a beach, stars, etc it would be too busy. If I didn't include those elements it would be too plain, too much like a logo of sorts. I planned on salvaging the glowsticks to play with the border as some original covers did and the moon would be the round shape to tie in the back cover artwork. I played with the scale of the couple silos to open up some more room for the party crowd. I planned on adding notes, stars, lasers and more. All of which I could just duplicate in photoshop and arrange accordingly and then add color and effects.</span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFHsWs6kqF4P9bPV6RkJba8k8dMngqk0jtukEL5IMyTCzfBOPy5V3gtOpqiipufJOilZEH5SlIHzobFpKeOHcdPajQGahJmV-zj0MIENA27zaa6OwvelHWJOnNiwQLDNEbnt8TzMfLFdDh/s1600/cyoa+concepts+4.jpeg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 252px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFHsWs6kqF4P9bPV6RkJba8k8dMngqk0jtukEL5IMyTCzfBOPy5V3gtOpqiipufJOilZEH5SlIHzobFpKeOHcdPajQGahJmV-zj0MIENA27zaa6OwvelHWJOnNiwQLDNEbnt8TzMfLFdDh/s320/cyoa+concepts+4.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491200737682433362" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisYLezJc0lWF7DmT5l_zYNYk31KOrJ_JHdGBRDo4UVeUDQcaI5fg6EmiELcn1spLplMExPbgHvpTOmWLpSUNg0uq17M2T23OtLdm5hJNdifXkRDejdedB-Om4kDhK4u4SybfA-P9iHYU3t/s1600/cyoa+concepts+5.jpeg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 252px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisYLezJc0lWF7DmT5l_zYNYk31KOrJ_JHdGBRDo4UVeUDQcaI5fg6EmiELcn1spLplMExPbgHvpTOmWLpSUNg0uq17M2T23OtLdm5hJNdifXkRDejdedB-Om4kDhK4u4SybfA-P9iHYU3t/s320/cyoa+concepts+5.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491203319103355778" border="0" /></a>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4630451246136879263.post-2176479826474156492010-07-07T09:14:00.000-07:002010-07-07T09:19:01.303-07:00CYOA PART 4<span style="font-family:arial;">Back to the drawing board. I had more of a driven idea now so I limited my sketches and detail this round to basic shapes and elements. I played with big images of the couple and the Cape Hatteras lighthouse made a good, subtle piece to tie everything.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEaOe-eRhntBMmugrxGszzKq3swx9as-eyZkk2ZowIZgnSF9aTDWTlfEtripHv5uDslU7LAm9hGmrpBhOYme5EMXjjwMnLPyp4j12ArAn6jzJZhrbb4f1SBZqhi7n2iK3Wc6M6W5Rp9Gqd/s1600/cyoa+concepts+3.jpeg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 125px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEaOe-eRhntBMmugrxGszzKq3swx9as-eyZkk2ZowIZgnSF9aTDWTlfEtripHv5uDslU7LAm9hGmrpBhOYme5EMXjjwMnLPyp4j12ArAn6jzJZhrbb4f1SBZqhi7n2iK3Wc6M6W5Rp9Gqd/s320/cyoa+concepts+3.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491198778045367234" border="0" /></a>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4630451246136879263.post-40214933815772345472010-07-07T09:05:00.000-07:002010-07-07T09:14:09.200-07:00CYOA PART 3<span style="font-family:arial;">I was pretty happy with one of the thumbnail sketches and went for a bigger, more detailed version. The sketch used the blue circles of the watch as it's main focus, the couple got lost with the crowd - they lost their importance. I knew in my gut the the circles would be used for the back art with a hand reaching out. Using the same concept on both sides would be wrong. Let alone, this did not feel like art from the original covers. I knew I had to start over. Maybe back to the record idea, maybe a full moon, something with a round shape to tie the two sides together.<br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcL6FYx_Srp1rc9DfjpVgM8DqhfJoYyPl7H_a0rUIUoL4jVEz-90wzSwPREG87ll30HZNo6icT_ABSUGRJyLZAn56NyvxLc2cNK8S78XbCMMDjSdvylpf7am1SRp4QtZfjEppS1BOz58Au/s1600/cyoa+concepts+2.jpeg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 263px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcL6FYx_Srp1rc9DfjpVgM8DqhfJoYyPl7H_a0rUIUoL4jVEz-90wzSwPREG87ll30HZNo6icT_ABSUGRJyLZAn56NyvxLc2cNK8S78XbCMMDjSdvylpf7am1SRp4QtZfjEppS1BOz58Au/s320/cyoa+concepts+2.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491198286022075970" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Mdvl8AdltBgVEgEo9ShlilRtJo5U8deptobMT-w3AbXLqnbySO_poppFEh1i2jREG1ShakUyX_ht1wPVDj8ToYTQFwvUlNiLUFCkOM0c_wWIGCnFvOS1loU62S1j0ytCp4Pf1trgTYvd/s1600/cyoa+concepts+3.jpeg"><br /></a>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4630451246136879263.post-37405974109716433292010-07-07T08:58:00.001-07:002010-07-07T09:12:31.106-07:00CYOA PART 2Matching the border was easy in illustrator. I scanned the title of a original book and found the font. I knew the art had to have some weird overlapping and perspective to it. The original cover artwork always had a painting/sketched feel to it. The back cover was B&W line art.<br /><br />I really wanted the blue circles of the watch to the be the centerpiece...possibly a record. I did some initial layout sketches for cover art as well as some brainstorming for book titles and the back copy.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Ax_hPUTBYg890tLUdZZ-wCMHi2pW_mWMdKASdoFcpJgzdf476lksJlFMTv5X13WW3kdRkXhNA5oQ0T83REcZpvqteALegmZffwJyXXhIIFS9ukqsJwfhg5BrDkEHL4BpTFWZkv9Pbr9E/s1600/cyoa+concepts+1.jpeg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 95px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Ax_hPUTBYg890tLUdZZ-wCMHi2pW_mWMdKASdoFcpJgzdf476lksJlFMTv5X13WW3kdRkXhNA5oQ0T83REcZpvqteALegmZffwJyXXhIIFS9ukqsJwfhg5BrDkEHL4BpTFWZkv9Pbr9E/s320/cyoa+concepts+1.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491194459721035682" border="0" /></a>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4630451246136879263.post-38799830798701795872010-07-07T07:42:00.000-07:002010-07-07T08:57:46.989-07:00Choose your Own Adventure!<span style="font-family:arial;">To celebrate my 5yr wedding anniversary I wanted to do something extra special for the gift. My wife is a huge fan of the CYOA books from childhood. My initial plan was to create an entire actual book with yes, multiple endings. Seeing as with on demand printing I could have a paperback book printed for just $10 with a color cover/back. As I started the outline of my last 10 years together with her I realized I bit off way more than I could chew. The book jacket design was the right way to go. I did a quick sketch of the front and back art. Then I played with a lot of headline options. All of which had to nod to the original books dated charm.<br /><br />We met on the beach during a party. She actually grabbed my wrist in passing because I had a blinking blue watch that she had never seen before. I knew the watch had to be a part of the piece if not the main focus.</span><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX1Gw3cu59aUO-74oTn1XsPZp8c5dNDYX4tbMgXhYj1f8w6pPgEwU6yHDMrTK7NCXtX_-6qoaIlcVfygWzLpDQHNlxYBBQEaGtkfOwWG5Q_fK1x67mSYBQVVw4Fsww4_8jy9MqqMGyN7OQ/s1600/cyoa+initial+concepts_front.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 315px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX1Gw3cu59aUO-74oTn1XsPZp8c5dNDYX4tbMgXhYj1f8w6pPgEwU6yHDMrTK7NCXtX_-6qoaIlcVfygWzLpDQHNlxYBBQEaGtkfOwWG5Q_fK1x67mSYBQVVw4Fsww4_8jy9MqqMGyN7OQ/s320/cyoa+initial+concepts_front.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491192666517091746" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1LslNI6zfg3RFDTYSbe8q-0I0WeSnxmAdpjyqBNVYokxcN7-mfsm3QLk9qyFCC0IHv0qOp_28pItSluqfO4MqqoJYDR0XShgnccrn-rCAk9LxjmHy-jHlz7LqzznZe8qLdynLwoNJ4xFg/s1600/cyoa+initial+concepts_back.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 268px; height: 261px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1LslNI6zfg3RFDTYSbe8q-0I0WeSnxmAdpjyqBNVYokxcN7-mfsm3QLk9qyFCC0IHv0qOp_28pItSluqfO4MqqoJYDR0XShgnccrn-rCAk9LxjmHy-jHlz7LqzznZe8qLdynLwoNJ4xFg/s320/cyoa+initial+concepts_back.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491191976833417202" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br /></span>matKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07731765225908981395noreply@blogger.com0
